Amtrak has confirmed a planned leadership transition, with President Roger Harris leaving the company on 31 July, according to a statement issued by Board Chair Tony Coscia.
Harris will depart after overseeing a period in which the US passenger rail operator reported record ridership and revenue figures. During his tenure, Amtrak also progressed several infrastructure and service initiatives, including the introduction of the NextGen Acela fleet, the launch of Mardi Gras service, and continued work on the Portal North Bridge project.
This announcement follows the resignation of former CEO Stephen Gardner in 2025. This move aimed to ensure that Amtrak maintained the confidence of the current administration.
Byl Herrmann will assume the role of Interim President following Harris’s departure while the Board undertakes a search for a permanent Chief Executive Officer.
Herrmann has worked at Amtrak for 27 years and has held senior responsibilities across legal, human resources and labour relations functions, as well as the company’s business operations.
In the statement, Coscia described Herrmann as well placed to guide the organisation through the transition period. He said the interim leader would work with the Board and executive leadership team to maintain continuity across the business and support employees.
Amtrak notes that its immediate priorities would remain focused on safety, operational reliability and meeting commitments to passengers, partners and the communities it serves.
